In Their Studios

In Their Studios is an exploration of what goes on in the studio where the mystery of art is being made.

I visited twenty-five studios, then created a photo essay in a 96-page book, plus exhibit of over 100 framed black and white images.  A range of artists are included, from painters to glass makers to videographers, just a sampling of the depth of talent living in our community.

My intention was to keep the images impressionistic.  They were made in one visit, without supplemental light or extra equipment, unposed and informal.  The conditions were unknown and unpredictable, making the visits even more exciting.  It was a privilege to be invited into their private spaces.

I had not done portraits before, so I was particularly interested in capturing the artists in their own environment, turning the tables, making them the subject.

The book was locally published at Curcio Printing in Vestal.  It's 96 pages, 9 x 9, soft cover, and has 100+ duotone images and a written statement from each visit.

It was my first book publishing experience.  I did it the old-fashioned way, on a printing press.  Curcio Printing was wonderful to work with.  I could not have done it without them, or Jaci Saunders, who helped me design it.

West End Gallery, Corning, New York - a local gem

I am grateful to Lin Gardner at West End Gallery, in Corning, who first showed my exhibit in 2008 and encouraged me to do the book.

Art at the Gate
In Their Studios was exhibited for a year in the newly created artspace at the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport, from March to March, 2010-2011.   I worked with Ann Crook, the airport manager, who had the vision to show art in the airport.  I was privileged to be the first artist to show there, a valuable new venue for artists in the area.

While you waited to board your plane, you could view my black and white images from In Their Studios. You could see portraits and studios of artists, such as Gary Weisman, an internationally recognized sculptor, who created the statue of Mark Twain on the Elmira College campus. He has a foundry and studio nearby, unknown to most.

Arnot Museum, Elmira, New York

I also had an exhibit called The Observer at the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira, New York, which was held from March to June 2012 and some of the In Their Studios images were part of it.

The book can be purchased at my studio at 11 West Market Street in Corning, or ordered by contacting me at BarbBlumer@gmail.com.   Shipping is free.
